Interview with Gary Ferber By Damien English - Editor, Marin Scope For about a quarter of a century, Ferber has been working in this town as a photographer, housing his business on the MLK property for all those years. However, his entire career as a photographer spans 35 years. The results of all these years are framed on his office wall with well-known faces like Jay Leno and Jeff Foxworthy next to Sausalitans like former Mayor Fritz Warren and community notables Leonard and Agnes Kaprielian. “I was born in Chicago, then we moved to Kansas City, Brooklyn, Omaha, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, and then I moved up here to Marin 30 years ago,” says Ferber, who lived in Fairfax and Larkspur before coming to Sausalito’s MLK property. It was college that brought Ferber out west. In fact, he says that “Newport Beach had the biggest proportion of single women and schools, so that’s where I went.” Ferber attended Orange Coast Junior College, then moved north and attended College of Marin and the San Francisco Art Institute. Ferber attributes the beginning of his interest of photography to his time spent in El Toro in 1969, where he worked as a motorcycle track photographer. “I became a photo major in college in my third year. Then I moved up here and got into fashion photography before moving back down and getting even more into fashion photography.” For three years, Ferber shot photos for six fashion catalogues a year for a clothing company from India. He had 35 models, enabling him to not only provide the photography, but also the models and the location for the shoots. After that, Ferber did the photography for a couple of his models’ weddings, which launched him into a whole new direction. Today, Ferber has shot almost 2,000 weddings. “When I moved back here, I was doing weddings more inland,” says Ferber, who started working in Larkspur upon his return. “Marin Art and Garden was one of the main places I worked, as well as the Falkirk Mansion and the Elks Club. It was hot working there, and I enjoyed the work in Sausalito by the water. So I kept approaching places like the Alta Mira, the Casa Madrona, the Corinthian Yacht Club and the Spinnaker for work so I could be on the water. The best place for a wedding in Sausalito is the Spinnaker because it’s air conditioned and on the water.” Ferber has managed to develop a relationship with the Spinnaker restaurant in particular, as he is the only photographer they refer. He does their promotional photos, including the most recent post card photo, which was widely distributed. He had a similar relationship previously with the Casa Madrona for more than 12 years. “I photographed Queen Elizabeth and Ronald Reagan when they came to the De Young Museum,” says Ferber. “I was the only photographer in the private party. David Frost made it very easy for me to do that because he thought he knew me, so I went with it. He took me around and started introducing me to people.” At that party, Ferber ran into Joe Montana, fresh off a Super Bowl win, and was asked to take a picture by an unfamiliar man who he later found out was Willie Mays. “But the most impressive person I met was Billy Graham, the evangelist,” Ferber says. “No wonder he is where he is. That guy is something else, he was a trip.” Ferber did many big events in San Francisco over the years and rubbed elbows with most mayors, including Gavin Newsom most recently. He was also the photographer at the St. Francis Hotel for a number of years. Locally, Ferber has been a member of Sausalito Rotary for 17 years, a member of and photographer for the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce for 17 years, and the current photographer for the Sausalito Yacht Club. For the last six years, he has also been shooting for the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce, which named him volunteer of the year two years ago. He doesn’t advertise; all his work is from referrals. Right now, he is starting at square one and introducing himself to caterers in the hopes he can boost his wedding work. He is adamant about staying on the water.
